John H. Gardner, MBA, CHE

As Founder and President of Medical Practice Profits John brings together his 30 years of diversified leadership and management experience within the healthcare provider industry including hospital administration, physician practice management, management of radiologic and sleep disorder diagnostics and technology driven clinical documentation services.

In addition, having grown up in a large family retailing business, John has from a young age had a keen sense of the serving the needs of the public as the central key ingredient for profitable business operations.

Within healthcare service settings, he has provided insight, leadership and management direction to enterprise operations approaching $100 million dollars, multi-facility corporate services management and consulting, development of service provider networks, negotiation of managed care provider contracts, and sales & marketing.

He has founded two companies and has provided broad based consulting services to physicians and other health related companies in the areas of strategic planning, business and human resource development, operational analysis, re-structuring and coaching for senior management.

Having worked with thousands of physicians over his healthcare career, he has seen first hand, the increasing frustration and in some cases disillusionment of many numbers of physicians with regard to their ability to profitably operate their practices and provide the level and integrity of care that they would like.

John has earned his MBA, is a Certified Healthcare Executive (CHE) and Diplomat in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and is an associate member of the Center for Business Ethics. He has been active within the Southern California healthcare community for 25 years, is a public speaker on a range of business topics including business ethics, and serves on the board of several business and community organizations.

Judy Capko

Judy Capko is the founder of Capko & Company (www.capko.com) and author of the popular book “Secrets of the Best-Run Practices,” Greenbranch Publishing, September 2005. Judy has specialized in medical practice operations and marketing for more than 20 years, and is a certified risk management specialist. Her emphasis is on building patient-centered strategies and valuing staff’s contribution.

Beyond this, she focuses on maximizing resources, resulting in improved operational and financial performance. Hundreds of physicians and administrators have benefited from her advice and innovative, energetic approach to organizational management and strategic planning. Judy has gained national recognition in her field, working with both small and large practices, as well as major academic faculty practices from coast to coast.

Judy was a charter member of the National Association of Health Care Consultants and the past marketing chairperson for the Society of Medical-Dental Management Consultants. She served on the advisory panel and was a frequent presenter for Quality Forums, a national program sponsored by Pfizer Pharmaceutical. For several years she served as a judge for the national “Physician of the Year” competition sponsored by Physicians Practice, Inc.

Judy is a popular speaker for major healthcare conferences such as MGMA, national specialty associations, healthcare systems, regional medical societies and healthcare executive summits. She has been interviewed by and published in over 30 prestigious national medical journals including American Medical News, Dermatology Times, Family Practice Management, Group Practice Journal, Medical Economics, Ophthalmology Times, Orthopedics Today, Physicians Advisory, Physicians Practice, Private Practice Success, The Journal of Medical Practice Management and Urology Times.

Hal Wurtzel, MBA

Prior to launching his own consulting practice, Hal served as Vice President, Corporate Development for 380-bed Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California.

During his tenure, he played a major role in the recruitment of primary care physicians, obtaining significant increases in third-party payor contracts, development of relationships with five IPAs, adding new and profitable services programs, developing a joint venture of imaging services, establishment of three off-site ambulatory clinics, and gaining maximum exposure for Valley Pres through the design and implementation of a multidimensional marketing and PR Program.

Hal also served as Senior Vice President for Pacific Health Resources, the for-profit management arm of the Lutheran Hospital Society and later, Unihealth. During his eight years at Pacific Health Resources, he was responsible for management of the consulting division, which provided strategic planning, marketing assistance, management engineering services, facilities design and financial feasibility studies to the owned and managed hospitals of LHS, as well as other healthcare providers not affilicated with LHS, including ambulatory clinics, medical groups, and other acute care facilities.

Hal is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned his Master's degree in Healthcare Administration and his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
