Are Consumers Ready for Consumer Directed Health Care?
Do they have any idea of what its going to mean to them?
What great things it can do for them?
While the concept is great, Consumer Directed Health Care (CDHC) represents a major change in the way healthcare will be delivered and paid for in the future.
If they don’t understand it and if they aren't prepared to take responsibility for your own health and wellness, they will be in trouble.
For decades, healthcare economists have theorized that if we could only keep people well, then we would have significant improvement in our national health and significant reductions in healthcare costs.
The problem has been that patients and consumers have not been adequately incentivized nor properly trained so most programs have failed as evidenced by one third of our population being obese and many more than that are dealing with one or more chronic diseases.
Soon they will have little choice:
- as more and more employers reduce or eliminate health insurance coverages and increases deductibles and copays
- as the costs for healthcare services continues to exceed cost of living increases by a wide margin
- as many physicians are turning away new Medicare and commercial insurance patients based on dramatic reductions in physician and hospital reimbursement
Well enough negative, let’s look at the positive and rewarding side of Consumer Directed Healthcare.
Recent legislative changes have set the stage for them to take control of their own health and wellness – put money aside on a tax free basis – and use any money they don’t spend for medical care to build their retirement accounts.
From this point on, lets look at them as a consumer rather than a patient.
Patients are generally sick folks in a physicians office or in a hospital. But most of your patients are currently well and you are not seeing them.
We all want to be well, healthy and vibrant and to prove it, each year Americans spend hundreds, perhaps thousands of their own dollars on a broad range of health & wellness products & services.
Unfortunately much of the money we spend is mis-spent because it is generally not part of a planned comprehensive approach under the direction of a trained health advocate physician.
Rather, millions are spent based on the latest articles or fads. We are looking for the quick fix & cover up to offset our poor eating habits, lack of exercise and fast paced lifestyles.
If you want to help your patients take charge of their own health & wellness, reduce the total amount of money their are spending on medical care, reduce the likelihood of spending their retirement years crippled with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, etc, and instead help them enjoy a healthy, vibrant life & lifestyle with plenty of money in your retirement account then go to
